Beginning as a cello in the late 17th century, the bass has been involved in different genres. After a breif explosion of interest in the instrument during the birth of jazz and the blues in the early 1920's, it skulked into the background. To this day, it still stands as merely the supporting role of the music industry.
Such derivates as the 12-string bass(pic.#4) is built on the same principle as the 12-string guitar, where the strings are grouped into courses tuned in unison or octaves, to be played simultaneously.
